Quick and Easy: A Photo Shoot with Element

By Published On: February 8th, 2024

I’ve been thinking recently about some of the amazing relationships we have built with clients over the years.

The fact that we have a history working together means that we understand each others’ approaches and what needs to be done so that we can both do our respective jobs to the best of our abilities.

That relationship really does remove the ‘barrier of the unknown’ when clients decide they want to start a new creative project together.

Take for example this photo shoot I completed for Shona, Race Director of Brisbane Trail Ultra, this past week. She flicked me a text message on a Monday morning at 5:40am (she’s an early riser…must be a running thing!) and asked if I’m available to capture some images showcasing sponsor products in the lead up to the Brisbane Trail Ultra in June.

“Yep no worries. Wednesday would be great.” I replied at 5:43am.

And with a couple of back and forth messages we had a plan.

This is the beautiful creekline that features at the beginning of the Brisbane Trail Ultra course. Not a bad location at all!

But photo shoots are tedious and boring, I hear you say!

Well they shouldn’t be.

After arriving 20 minutes early and having a walk around the creek area (and loading up on mozzie spray), I came up with a plan for the best positions and angles to showcase the runners and products. I asked Shona what she had in mind and we got on the same page before we started the shoot. She was happy for me to lead the way with my chosen positions.

Then our super star talent arrived and we had Katie from Club KT with us for an hour, so we got straight into it.

And yes, you heard that correctly…a one hour photo shoot. Tedious and boring I think not!

Fast, but Professional Imagery

For many of the images I worked with a three-flash setup because, as you can imagine, the creek rainforest area is quite dark and dull when shooting with natural light.

So to move quickly and capture quality photographs in a one-hour session can be quite a challenging feat. It’s enough to cause even an accomplished photographer to sweat a little! And while I did sweat (for humidity and physical exertion reasons) I just had an absolute blast working with these two runners on the trail.

Since we’re running on time…

Since we knocked that shoot over early, Shona asked if I had any more time available. Thankfully I was up for a little more bushwalking (and photography of course) so we drove to another location and tackled the Kulgun Circuit for some additional content.

And that was our shoot.

120 Photos delivered the next day, and happy smiles all round.

We’re so thrilled to work with Shona each year during the Brisbane Trail Ultra weekend. This year the event will be held 28-30th June; the race includes 10km, 20km, 30km, 60km, 110km and 100 mile categories, so there’s something for everyone!
