O What I’ve Learned (Griffith O-Week)
It’s been seventeen years since I attended a Griffith University O-Week as a student, beginning a course in Film and Screen Media at South Bank’s Griffith Film School.
Doing the math and realising that nearly twenty years has gone by, it makes sense why the average age at this past week’s O-Week at Nathan campus felt a little young to me! Regardless, I could literally feel the energy and excitement that comes with starting a new chapter in life and I couldn’t help but walk away energized from the experience.
Granted my memory of O-Week in 2007 is probably a little foggy, but I certainly don’t remember attending such a grand-scale event as the one I witnessed last Wednesday. As you’ll see, the organizers of this two-day O-Week Festival event really knew how to put on a show! What an epic entrance into a learning journey for these new students in 2024.
I’m going to take a step onto my high-horse of “twenty years life experience” and share some of that mid-30s wisdom now (that nobody asked for). In my opinion, dedicated learning and growth are one of the most important tools that you can equip yourself with as you progress through your life and career.
That doesn’t necessarily mean learning from a textbook or consuming course-material. These things have their place, of course. However it’s an individual’s dedication to continuous learning that allows them the opportunity to grow as a person and a professional. Without it, you’re looking up at the ceiling rather than an open sky of possibilities.
So good luck to the learners who have taken their first steps into University and the learning journey ahead. And a friendly reminder to those already twenty, thirty or forty years into their career – keep up the learning, and look for the next area of your career or life that’s ready for improvement! It’s never too late.
