In celebration of my younger brother Mark turning a year older we decided to head out on a night walk up to the top of Cunninghams Gap, a beautiful spot along the scenic rim.

This friendly carpet python met us on the path on the walk up. We saw 3 snakes in total during the overnight trip.
Leaving at around 11.30pm at night and arriving at 1am at the top of Mt Mitchell, we snuck in a few hours of rest and awaited the beautiful sunrise. With 360 degree views it was a pretty spectacular sight.

Looking east at the sun rising over the coast.

A great reward for a 1.5 hour walk.

The required selfie at the top.

It doesn’t take long to become a very rainforest-like walk, with green mossy sections near the very top which are often covered in cloud.

Slippery sections and near-edges make this a bit of an exciting walk at times.

Descending from Mt Mitchell.
For a 3 hour round trip, Mt Mitchell is a great walk with very little difficulty – apart from some steep sections. The track is very visible and easy to follow. Maybe not a good choice for very young children but an enjoyable walk for beginners and experienced walkers.
You can find information about the Cunninghams Gap walks on the government website here.
Thanks for reading, and enjoy the great outdoors!
