Merida HV24HR Mountain Bike Race [Video and Pics]
When it comes to a 24 Hour Mountain Bike Race there’s certainly a lot of nerves and reservations in the lead up to the event. We have to admit that the riders weren’t the only ones feeling some of these emotions as the weekend of the 8-9th April approached faster and faster on our calendar. This was our first time attending the Merida 24 Hour event at Hidden Vale Adventure Park.
Working out the best way to film a 16km track being run over 24 hours and to demonstrate the gruelling nature of the event was quite a daunting logistical activity. Having known the trails relatively well from past events and from personally riding out at Hidden Vale Adventure Park several times, this made the job a bit easier. We certainly knew that there would be world class trails all the way around the course.
In a 24 Hour race there are a number of categories that riders can enter based on their age, bike type and willingness to push their bodies to the limit – so they can enter in a team and take turns completing laps in relay style, or they can ride completely solo if they’re up for it. During the 24 Hours they can stop, sleep, eat, change light batteries and so on – whatever it takes to keep them going and complete as many laps as they possibly can. Hydration and energy are key to this type of physical event.
When it comes to the filming, it may not be fair to compare our weekend with what the riders had to endure, but we certainly had a big task ahead of us. Having said that, at least we had a vehicle to help get around the course! Here’s a look at the event video from the weekend.
